To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Edge. But it costs extra on the RX.

Both the Edge and the RX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available front and rear parking sensors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Edge the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2022, a rating granted to only 174 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The RX has not been fully tested, yet.

There are over 12 times as many Ford dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

The Edge has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The RX doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Edge has a standard 760-amp battery. The RX’s 603-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

Both the Edge and the RX have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Edges have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The RX 350h/500h doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Edge uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The RX 350 requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Edge has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the RX 350h/500h’s standard fuel tank (18.5 vs. 17.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Edge has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The RX doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Edge has larger standard tires than the RX (245/60R18 vs. 235/60R19). The Edge ST’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the RX (265/40R21 vs. 235/60R19).

The Edge ST’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the RX’s optional 50 series tires.

The Edge has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The RX base model’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Edge’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The RX doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Edge ST handles at .83 G’s, while the RX 500h F Sport Performance pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Edge ST executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2 seconds quicker than the RX 500h F Sport Performance (26 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 28 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

The Edge is 3.7 inches shorter than the RX, making the Edge easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The RX doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge ST uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The RX doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Edge has .7 inches more front headroom, 1.5 inches more front legroom, 2.2 inches more front shoulder room, 1.7 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom, 1.5 inches more rear hip room and 4 inches more rear shoulder room than the RX.

The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the RX with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 29.6 cubic feet). The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the RX with its rear seat folded (73.4 vs. 46.2 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Edge easier. The Edge’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.6 inches, while the RX’s liftover is 31 inches.

The Edge’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the RX’s (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

The Edge ST can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Edge can be unhitched and driven around locally. The RX can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Consumer Reports rated the Edge’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the RX’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”
