Safety

The Ford Edge has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Envision doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Edge has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Envision doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The Edge’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Envision doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Edge and the Envision have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available front and rear parking sensors.

Warranty

The Edge’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Envision’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 3 times as many Ford dealers as there are Buick dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

Reliability

The Edge has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Envision doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Edge’s reliability 21 points higher than the Envision.

Engine

The Edge’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 22 more horsepower (250 vs. 228) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (280 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Edge ST’s standard 2.7 turbo V6 produces 107 more horsepower (335 vs. 228) and 122 lbs.-ft. more torque (380 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Edge has 2.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision (18.5 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Edge’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Envision:

12.6 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Edge has larger standard tires than the Envision (245/60R18 vs. 235/60R18). The Edge ST’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Envision (265/40R21 vs. 245/45R20).

The Edge ST’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Envision Sport Touring/Avenir’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Edge ST offers optional 21-inch wheels. The Envision’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The Edge has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Envision doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Edge’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the Envision (112.2 inches vs. 109.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Edge is 1.5 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the Envision.

Passenger Space

The Edge has 13.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Envision (113.9 vs. 100.4).

The Edge has .6 inches more front headroom, 2.2 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front hip room, 3.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.4 inches more rear headroom, 1.3 inches more rear legroom, 10.1 inches more rear hip room and 4.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Envision.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Edge’s rear seats recline. The Envision’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Envision with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 25.2 cubic feet). The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Envision with its rear seat folded (73.4 vs. 52.7 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Edge SEL/Titanium/ST’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Envision doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Edge. The Envision doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Buick Envision is limited to 1500 pounds. The Edge offers up to a 3500 lbs. towing capacity.

The Edge ST can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Edge can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Envision can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Ergonomics

The Edge’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Envision’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the Edge’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Envision’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

The Edge has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Envision.
